IFS

Having been exposed to many different approaches to psychotherapy, Dr. Felder has found that Internal Family Systems offers one of the most honoring and compassionate pathways toward a healthier self. It recognizes that the strategies we developed for emotional survival were intelligent and protective, even when they later become burdens we are called to heal.
IFS also respects the deeper truth that beneath all our parts lives a divine spark — a steady, wise, unbroken Self. This approach not only helps us tend to our wounded places, but also invites us to reconnect with that inner light that has been there all along.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic model that views every person as a system of inner “parts” guided by a core Self, whose natural qualities include calm, clarity, compassion, and confidence. This approach is non pathologizing and teaches that multiplicity of mind is normal and healthy — our parts are not flaws, but adaptive inner beings shaped by experience. IFS was developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, who observed that people naturally describe their inner world as a collection of sub personalities, each with its own emotions, beliefs, and roles. (IFS Institute) At the heart of IFS is the understanding that every person has a Self, an inner presence that is inherently wise, grounded, and capable of leading the internal system. Around this Self are “parts,” which may take on extreme roles when burdened by past experiences. Some parts act as protectors, trying to manage or prevent pain, while others hold the wounds themselves. IFS helps people differentiate from these parts, understand their positive intentions, and support them in releasing burdens so they can return to their natural, balanced roles. (IFS Institute) The basic premise of IFS is that all parts are welcome and that each one, no matter how disruptive it may seem, is ultimately trying to help. Therapy focuses on restoring harmony by helping protectors trust the Self’s leadership and helping wounded parts heal. This process often brings a sense of inner spaciousness, emotional clarity, and deeper connection to oneself and others. IFS is used with individuals, couples, and families, and has been applied to concerns such as depression, anxiety, trauma, and general well being. (Psychology Today) One of the key advantages of IFS is its non pathologizing, compassionate approach. Instead of trying to eliminate symptoms, it invites curiosity toward the inner system and honors the wisdom within each part. Research has shown benefits for emotional healing, self compassion, and even physical health conditions. Many people find that IFS not only reduces distress but also strengthens their sense of inner leadership — the ability to meet life with the qualities known as the “8 C’s”: calm, clarity, curiosity, compassion, confidence, courage, creativity, and connectedness.
